Orthopedics is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.
The specialty of Orthopaedic surgery is devoted to the care for all ages, from newborns with birth defects through to senior citizens with arthritis and fractures. Sports injuries are also an important part of Orthopaedic surgery. more |

• Begin Passive motionw on day of surgery.
• On the afternoon of surgery the shoulder is passively
flexed up to 90-110 degrees by the physiotherapist.
• On the second post-operative day the patient does
his/her own passive flexion with an overhead pulley (using the bed frame and
the opposite arm).
• A "broomstick" is used for external rotation
(check with Dr Allen for the safe range).
• Pendular exercises are performed.
• The patient may use the arm for gentle activities of
daily living from the second day including feeding, drinking, dental hygiene
and writing.
• The patient may be discharged on the second or third
postoperative day.
• Pendular, external rotation and pulley exercises are
continued at home.
• The sling is used for two weeks when out of the home.
• The patient is encouraged to use the arm wherever
possible.
• Sutures or clips may be removed at 14 days.
• The patient should be reviewed by Dr Allen approximately
two weeks from the surgery.
