Orthopedics is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.
The specialty of Orthopaedic surgery is devoted to the care for all ages, from newborns with birth defects through to senior citizens with arthritis and fractures. Sports injuries are also an important part of Orthopaedic surgery. more |

These are general principals, specific treatment protocols will vary from patient to patient.

A short leg splint is applied.
-
This splint is removed at three to five days post operatively. If the flap shows uncomplicated healing and the wound is sealed, early active range of motion is begun at this time.

Second post operative week, active range of motion of the ankle and subtalar joint is instituted. Patients learn to draw the alphabet with the hallux of the injured limb or make progressively larger circles with their feet.

No weight bearing is allowed for twelve weeks unless advised.
- Protection is provided by use of a removable boot orthosis or a plaster depending on the fracture.
- Weight bearing is instituted at ten to twelve weeks
- Hardware may be removed, if symptomatic, at one year.
