Ganglion cysts or Ganglions are very common and can occur in most sites in the skeleton. They are most commonly found in the wrist. Though they can be symptomatic and unsightly, they are harmless.

Ganglions generally form next to a joint and are a thin sack containing a jelly-like substance similar to thick joint lubricating fluid. They can vary in size from a few millimetres to a couple of centimetres. The ganglion can vary in size with use of the adjacent joint. Sometimes they may simply disappear altogether, only to appear some months or years later,
No one knows why ganglions form. They may be painful (usually a dull ache in the area of the joint), or may just be unsightly. Sometimes ganglions may not be visible at all as they are hidden deep in the surrounding tissues, these are called occult ganglions.
Surgery is usually done as a day procedure and involves a cut over the area of the ganglion through which the ganglion is removed.
