Hip and Knee replacement surgery are two of the most common major Orthopaedic procedures performed in Australia today. Techniques and related technology are continuing to evolve in this area, further improving the outcomes for our patients.
In an effort to minimize the surgical impact of hip replacement surgery, "small incision" or "minimally invasive" surgical approaches to the hip joint are beginning to emerge. Over the last year we have been evolving and developing this as part of the standard Hip Joint Replacement protocol.
Hip replacement is now typically performed through an incision 7 to 10 cm in length, rather than the longer and more invasive older incision. This lends itself to a much more cosmetic scar which is higher, smaller and more easily hidden by underwear. It requires less deep dissection, thereby minimizing surgical tissue damage and aiding recovery time.
Dr Allem uses this technique, combined with the Exerter Hip prosthesis, to provide the best solution for hip replacement in all age groups. The Exerter Jip continues to out-perform all other hip replacelment systems in long term survival with trdults well beyond 35 years.
